Why Is My Child Turning Against Me? What Parental Alienation Really Is

You’ve asked it… to yourself, to your family, to your friends, probably more than once. Why is my child turning against me? Why are they pulling away, repeating things that aren’t theirs, looking at you like you’re the one who did something wrong?

What you’re seeing didn’t start when you noticed it. It started a long time ago, quietly, right under your nose.

Alienation doesn’t just happen. It’s the end of a long process.

We talk about parental alienation like it’s an event. One day your child was close to you, the next day they weren’t. But a predatory parent doesn’t just alienate. Alienation is the product of a process that has been running for a long time.

That process has a name. Malicious Fracturing of Attachment. The predatory parent slowly wears down and fractures the secure attachment your child has to you, and alienation is simply where that process ends up. If you understand it as a process, you can start to interrupt it. If you only see the end result, it feels like it came out of nowhere.

It started the day you first held your child

This began the moment you held your baby in your arms.

The predatory parent knew, from the very beginning, how much that child meant to you. They saw exactly what they could weaponize later. And they were threatened by it, because that kind of secure, unconditional love is something they never had and cannot give. In their world, no one loved them that way, and they can’t imagine loving anyone that way either. Your bond with your child became the target and the threat at the same time.

So the erosion started early, in small ways you couldn’t have seen at the time. By the time it becomes visible, by the time your child flips or pulls away, it has often been working for years.

Your child doesn’t feel like they have a choice

I need you to understand what this does to your child, because it changes how you respond to it.

It’s a trap. It looks like breadcrumbs being handed to your child, except what’s being handed over is poison. Over time, your child’s ability to know in their own heart what you are to them gets worn down, and their sense of what’s real gets shaped by the parent who holds the most power.

Your child is compromised without knowing they’re compromised. They’re carrying grief they can’t name, and they’re a trauma victim almost no one around them is acknowledging. So when they pull back from you, or say something cruel, or perform being happy for a room full of adults, that’s survival. It was never a choice.

What can you do? You work triple-time to Reignite Attachment.

You can’t control how hard the predatory parent is working to erode your child’s attachment to you. You can control how you meet it. At it’s core all that matters is that we work on attachment – the one thing the abuser is trying to maliciously fracture.

Start by assuming it’s happening. Every time your child spends time in that home, assume the well is being poisoned, and predict what the predatory parent is saying about you. You know this person better than anyone. If you can predict it, you can prepare your response instead of getting caught off guard by it.

Then you do the real work, which is securing the attachment. Not arguing your case to your child. Not defending yourself. Being the steady, predictable, non-reactive parent whose love doesn’t flicker, over and over, so your child’s body keeps its own record of what safe feels like.

I always say the predatory parent works double-time to erode what your child needs. So you work triple-time to protect it. The sooner you recognize what’s happening, the sooner you can start pushing back against it.

You are not doing this alone

Watching this happen to your child is one of the loneliest experiences there is, especially when the world around you calls it a custody dispute and misses the harm entirely.

You don’t have to carry it by yourself. If you want to be around people who understand exactly what you’re describing, and get real-time guidance on protecting your child’s attachment while you’re still inside the storm, the Inner Circle is where that support lives. We’d love to have you.
